Kitchen Islands for Small NYC Apartments: What Works in Queens

Kitchen islands come up constantly in our consultations — and half the time, the homeowner has already decided they want one before we’ve seen the space. Here’s what we actually recommend after walking hundreds of Queens kitchens.

The 42-Inch Rule

You need at least 42 inches of clearance between the island and every adjacent surface — countertop, wall, or appliance. That’s the minimum for one person to work comfortably. For two people in the kitchen at the same time, 48 inches is better.

In a typical Queens apartment kitchen — often 8×12 to 10×14 feet — that clearance requirement rules out a fixed island in most layouts.

What Works Instead

Rolling prep cart: A 24×36” butcher block cart on locking casters. Moves out of the way when not needed, adds prep surface and storage when it is. Costs $400–$800. Works in virtually any kitchen.

Peninsula extension: If your kitchen is open on one side, we can extend your existing countertop into the living area as a cantilevered peninsula — a popular move in our open concept kitchen layouts work. Seats two to three on bar stools, adds 15–20 square feet of surface, and requires no clearance compromise because it attaches to the existing run.

Compact fixed island (12” depth): In kitchens with a full wall of counter on one side, a 12”-deep island along the opposite wall functions more like a breakfast bar — adds seating and storage without impeding traffic flow.

When a Real Island Works

If your kitchen is 200 square feet or more — common in detached homes in Jamaica, Bayside, and Howard Beach — a proper 36×72” island with seating on one side is absolutely viable. We install them regularly, often with prep sinks or additional dishwashers built in.

One Caution

Avoid online plans and YouTube tutorials that show islands in small kitchens. Many are staged for photography with the island rolled into position — they don’t show the kitchen in actual use with two people, open appliance doors, or a stroller parked nearby.
